On October 22, Apple announced the iPad Air. This latest version of the iPad tablet is the thinnest, lightest tablet Apple has produced to date. The design is similar to that of the iPad mini. The device weighs only one pound, making it 28% lighter than the previous version, the iPad 4. The screen on the iPad Air is approximately 9.7 inches wide. It comes complete with Retina Display and 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution. Although the screen is virtually the same size, the device comes with a smaller bezel to make it more compact. The iPad Air is also 20% thinner than its predecessor, with a thickness of only 7.5 mm.
According to Apple, the addition of MIMO 802 support will allow the iPad Air to offer twice the data transfer rate of previous versions when connected to Wi-Fi. This device will also include a Facetime HD front-facing camera, a 5-megapixel iSight camera and 10 hours of battery life. Furthermore, thanks to the inclusion of a 64-bit A7 process and an M7 motion coprocessor, the iPad Air will offer 72 times better graphics performance and 8 times the processing speed of the original iPad.
The new iPad Air marks the first major design of the iPad since March of 2011, when Apple released the iPad 2. This newest device is expected to hit the market on November 1st, with a starting price of $499. The iPad Air, which comes equipped with iOS 7, will be available in black, space grey, white and silver. An LTE version of this tablet will also be available at a higher price point. For users who prefer the previous version of Apple's tablet, the iPad 2 will remain available at a starting price of $399.
