On September 10th, Apple unveiled its two newest iPhone models to the public: the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C. The iPhone 5S is geared toward the higher end of the market, while the iPhone 5C is the less expensive version of the two and is designed to serve customers with a smaller tech budget. Both phones are an upgrade from the current models available, the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S. Apple will continue to offer the iPhone 4S as a free alternative while the iPhone 5 is being discontinued.
About the iPhone 5S For the first time Apple is offering a version of the iPhone in a color other than white or black. The iPhone 5S is available in three colors: white, space gray or gold. It includes an upgraded camera, a 64-bit A7 processor for speed and its newest feature, a fingerprint scanner used to identify the phone's owner and provide authentication for app-store purchases. The new camera includes an active sensor area that is 15 percent larger than that of the previous version, a larger 2.2 aperture, a five-element lens and automatic image stabilization, which is capable of combining multiple real-time images into a single sharpened shot. The iPhone 5S' 64-bit processor is the first to ever be used on a smartphone, and the fingerprint scanner will be covered in high-quality sapphire crystal to protect it from scratches.
Although the iPhone 5S features many upgrades over the last model, some of the features will remain the same. The screen on the new iPhone 5S is the same size as the screen on last year's version, and the phone's overall size and shape also remains unchanged. Its launch price is also the same as that of last year's version. The 64 GB iPhone 5S will be available for $399, the 32GB version will cost $299 and the 16GB iPhone 5S will sell for $199. All of these prices are contingent upon signing a two-year contract with an approved provider. Unlocked versions of the iPhone 5S are available for higher prices ranging from $649 to $849. Apple will release the 5S for sale on September 20th.
About the iPhone 5C The iPhone 5C features a plastic back and will come in a variety of colors, including yellow, pink, white, green and blue. The front of the phone remains black, while the rest of the phone, including all switches and buttons, feature the user's color choice. The iPhone 5C's case is made from polycarbonate. Its screen is larger than that of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S, and it also includes improved battery performance and a new FaceTime HD camera on the front. The iPhone 5C uses an A6 processor and comes with an 8-megapixel camera.
The iPhone 5C is more affordable than the 5S. For the 32 GB model, the price is $199, while the 16 GB model is available for only $99. Both of these price points include a two-year contract with an approved carrier. As with the iPhone 5S, unlocked versions are also available for higher prices ranging from $549 to $649. Apple will release the iPhone 5C to stores on September 20th, but it is available for preorder starting today, September 13th.
